Non-coverage Task Tracking

Photo Of The
Week Plans

As a managing editor of the publication, it is my job to assign tasks to the sections I oversee, which includes Social Media, Public Relations, Copy, Morale, and Website. Throughout the first semester, I created and edited a spreadsheet that detailed the assignments for each section, which is located in the publication's Google Drive. This allowed for the staffers and editors of the sections to easily reference their tasks for the cycle via the tabs of the spreadsheet and stay organized.

In the photo section, it is our job to create and
post a weekly photo on our website that
illustrates what is happening on our
campus during the given time period.
To manage this, my
co-editor Ashwin and I created a google spreadsheet that all
of our staffers can
access in order to keep track of the events happening and who is covering them. This
has proved helpful for us to keep track
of the people who have been assigned a story
so we can balance the staffers' coverage opportunities.

Basecamp Organization

In my sophomore and junior years, the platform Slack was used for communication across the publication; however, it was not the most effective in terms of assigning tasks and checking in with staffers. In my year as a managing editor, the EICs, other MEs, and I decided to switch to using Basecamp as the publication's communication platform.

To-dos and Cards

To-dos and Cards

This section of basecamp allows me to set due dates for tasks I assign to staffers and editors, and gives them a notification when a deadline is approaching. It also serves as a way for everyone on staff to visualize our progress throughout cycles.

Pings

Pings are a way to directly message others on the staff without sending it in the general chat. This was valuable in moving messages about work outside of texts, therefore aiding in the balance between friendships and work relationships on the newsmagazine.

Docs & Files

Docs & Files

All documents for the publication are stored is through The Muse's shared Google Drive. However, there is an extensive amount of folders and therefore documents in this Drive, and occasionally it may be hard for people to find specific spreadsheets or information. The Docs & Files section is a way to pin important documents to the home screen of Basecamp, so staff members can locate information easily.

Sept. & Oct. Media Analytics

Photo Of The
Week Plans

In order to analyze the success of the our posts across media platforms, namely Instagram, YouTube, and Spotify, I put together an analytics presentation with the help of social media editor Ashwin. This was important for us to understand what we were doing well in the beginning of the year, and how we can improve in the future. We were planning to present this presentation at an all-staff meeting, but the limited number of meetings we had made this difficult, and it eventually lost timeliness. I plan to make more of these as the year progresses, and hopefully can present the rest to the entire staff so they are equally as aware of how our content is performing outside of the website and print issues.
